Work Placement Intiation

Start of Work Placement

As from 3rd of March 2020, I will start my work placement in Nelson Pine Industries Ltd. as an IT Junior under the supervision from a IT Senior Manager who previously worked in a renowned IT company in New Zealand. The work will be done in a part-time scheme which will end approximately will end aorund the end of May 2020. It is a privilege to be working and be a part of one of the largest company in Nelson and hoping to learn various new knowledge from this experience.

The schedule of that I am working in right now is only 3 days in a week which 1 day is almost a full day work. In this first week, I manage to finish 2 parts of the project which are mapping the CCTV camera locations and the wireless access points as well. It was quite easy to get familiar with PRTG as I have studied quite a bit before starting my work here.

PRTG Dashboard Creation

It was not a highly complicated task but it does take a bit of time. From a list of CCTV cameras with its IP addresses, I should map these cameras on the NPI (Nelson Pine Industries Ltd.) site map according to the approximate location of the switch that it is connected to. Going through the task, some issues were found in the data in which there are a few unregistered CCTV cameras with the switch. The sensors attached to the CCTV cameras are the ping sensors which would tell the cameras uptime. In addition to that, a traffic light interface was added for ease of view.

Another activity which I finished was creating wireless access points uptime map. With the help of another co-worker, I managed to get information of APs and its connected switches. The method I went through this one was a bit more complicated than the CCTV cameras. By default, the sensors in the current switch devices mostly covers traffic sensors of trunks and uplinks to the other switches and potentially to the core. As this map would only need to display the uptime of the APs so that the team would easily view which and where the problem AP is. Through this creation of map, we also found out some missing information on some of the newer switches. With a complete information and structure of the switches in the network, it would help the process for the next step in this work placement project.

Proposal Creation

This week would be the submission of the work placement proposal which mostly covers my activity and other aspects such as possible limitations, ethical issues and statement of ownership. This proposal was not able to be developed as much as the proposed activity was not highly problematic subject. However, in my opinion, it the proposed work placement has a clear objectives and limitation as well as the other additional aspects.

After some feedback on the proposal, I will start looking more into the report writing as I would need to keep track of my activities publish it as a report.
